My New Love Affair

I have a new love affair living here and “Wild Bill” knows about it…in fact he is the one who gave me this new love for Mom’s Day! I bet you are wondering what it is…

Let me introduce you to” Lola”…a completely stock “1955 T-Bird” that WB surprised me with for Mother’s Day:) Yes we name our vehicles around here…always have as we feel they each have a distinct personality!

We are the third owner and interesting enough…all three owners have been women. I fell in love with this car the first time I drove it with “Wild Bill”. A customer had asked us to check all the running gear out on it as he had bought it for his wife in 1992 and they were ready to sell it.

When I first met “Wild Bill” this was my car…a silver “1964 Corvette Coupe”…which I loved so much! I have looked for another one the last 35 years and have not found one yet. After I drove “Lola” I was taken back to driving my “64”…Lola drives the same and feels the same and is very much like my Corvette! I know there are some Corvette addicts out there that are rolling their eyes that Lola can not possibly be like Lucretia (my “64’s” name)…and I admit this is the first Ford I have owned.

Lola is all class…leather dash and all original interior…6 volt…both tops…three speed overdrive…enough room for two people…and that beautiful Torch Red. She is also the first year of Thunderbird…and honestly if she was newer than a 1957 Bird I would not like her. I personally thought the 1955-1957 T-Birds were incredible.

When you drive her you have to actually drive her:) In other words in my Suburban I just lightly steer and off we go…with Lola you have to steer and watch the tach and shift up and down:):):) So that is why she reminded me of my “64 Vette”. This is a classic sports car back when America knew how to build cars…the golden age of real steel and real parts with attention to detail on horsepower and the ride:)

Here is a very cool touch…the exhaust exits through the two chrome ports above the bumper. They were designed to look like a WWII machine gun ports on a fighter plane…really!

And the hood scoop…love it with the cool grill in it:) Love the flags with the Ford logo.

Smile “Wild Bill”..I love you…so does Tucker and Dasher…he hates me taking his picture…can you tell?

I can’t stop taking pictures of Lola to share with you how amazing she is in person and I love taking pictures! Have you noticed?

My “Baby Bird” has a 292 CID overhead valve V-8. It was the second year of these motors for Ford…a big improvement over Ford’s old flathead engines. Lola’s really peppy even as a senior citizen:)

As I often say…see ya on down the trail driving Lola…L..O..L..A Lola…La-La-La Lola:) Ok here is a test for…who sang the “Lola” song I am humming along to?

Another beautiful country sunset that gifted us on a perfect weekend!

Geez, rub it in 🙂 My first car was a 53′ chevy that caught on fire and burned to the ground in front of the police station. My present car is a 97′ Dodge Dakota pick up truck with steer horns on the hood and a tack box in the bed…I guess I just never progressed very far in life 🙂

Oh my how awful to burn in front of the police station….geez! Hey no I hear ya on pick ups…all my life I have driven either an SUV as in Blazer when the kids were little and then a Yukon and finally now a Suburban…in between I drove a crew cab flat bed in 1980 and then a crew cab dually in 1989….and today I switch back and forth as in either Burb or Dually Pick Up…and now I get the 55 T-Bird too:) I have never owned a car except for the “64” Vette…until now. I think your truck sounds right on:) Are you still traveling? I have missed you!

        I returned monday:)
It was a great trip. I saw so much traveling / camping that I would never have seen if I flew and stayed in hotels. Of course being in a rent while it was 107 degrees wasn’t all that great but at night it was awesome. I met a lot of people in my search for the old west. I found one cowboys grave long forgotten ( see my post) and found a bit of gold too.
I could get a new truck, gave my son a new 2500 but there’s history to my truck. Lots of good times, lots of road coverage. I could make a movie on what all I’ve seen just through it’s windshield 🙂

Your travels sound adventurous and it is great that you saw so much of the country! Now the 107 degree part does not sound fun but when it cooled off at night I bet it was incredibly pretty with incredible sunsets:) Your truck sounds special and I know what you mean about memories and all that you saw in life driving around the country! Someday WB and I hope to travel the country and see our amazing America:)

Do it before the two of you get too old and set in your ways! Maybe take in a Buck Brannaman horse training clinic, then head off into the mountains for a week long trail ride 🙂

I’m working on it for sure….and that would be perfectly awesome to do with our two horses and if too far to haul hopefully we can find a place that has god horses to rent:) We have horse packed into the Eagle Caps up out of Wallowa, Oregon….Lostine, Oregon…and oh man oh man was it incredible….that was one thing I loved about where we lived in WY. was the high elevation as the air is different, the sky is different, the vegetation is different….it has been a few years now since we did the Eagle Capps and I still relive the ride often:)

Well then I guess I’m a bit late in my recommendations 🙂 That’s one thing on my bucket list… a long pack ride of a few weeks in the Rockies. The other is to open a kids camp teaching horsemanship and outdoor skills. Nothing straighted out my abusive childhood better than a summer camp I went to. There, a cowboy / camp councilor befriended me and gave me the tools and esteem to rise above the abuse and become the man I am today. I just know that somewhere, there’s a kid needing the same guiding hand. Through a kids camp, I hope to pass that hope on.

I highly recommend the pack trip….it is a ton of work though so we decided the next time we do it we will go with a guide and cook:) The kids camp sounds awesome and so important:) I looked into training with EAGALA which is a way of heling people with horses…it is a therapy type way that helps all ages of people from kids to adults in healing emotional pain and trauma using horses.

If so I will let you know:) Oops now I remember that you are off in Portland town…enjoy and shop for me:) I miss shopping!

I just knew it–your new love would be a car. But what about the dust from the road?? You know dust will drift onto your pretty new thang. Oh, I forgot, everyone behind you will be eating your dust! I can understand that only women have been the previous owners, it does look rather feminine–and hot!

We are very blessed to not live on a gravel or dirt road!!! And with the land around us being in CRP or grass etc. when we do have a dust storm we are pretty safe from the dirt:):) When I am not driving her she has a spot in the garage with a cover over her too:) And you betcha…I will lead the pack on the road to town!!! Wish you lived closer as we could go for a ride…she is awesome when you take the top off:) It was the red color that drew me in first….then seeing the interior that it was all classic from the good old days of car building…but what got me was driving her…there is nothing like a sports car that drives and shifts and it is so much fun!!! I know for sure that Jesus has a col sports car too:)

I was very surprised and feel blessed…have looked for years for a fun car for me to fall in love with…WB’s current custom built car that he is building himself is “Jagged”…it is a 1928 Dodge Coupe that has been chopped with suicide doors and he installed a V-12 Jag motor…had to stretch out the front a bit for it to fit….build his own headers and manifold but he did it and even made the motor work with an Edelbrock carb set up…many had told him it could not be done…LOL when you tel him that as he will do it…and he also has nitrous…and he put hundreds of louvers into it…runs fans under it like an Indie car has to keep it cool…car is not finished yet but is in progress…I felt like it would not be the car for me to drive to town!!! Be sure to share this with Motor Man…they have lots in common! How cool that he just rebuilt a 57 engine:) WB would send him work if we could live closer for sure:) Have a warm and happy evening:)
